Overcoming Adversity

A great way to inspire young athletes is with inspirational sports quotes. Texting athletes a quote is a great way to motivate. The following quotes speak to athletes methods to overcome adversity, which is a key to reaching ones goals. Many athletes succumb when things do not go their way, the successful ones find a way to overcome adversity.

“Adversity causes some men to break, and others to break records” – Source Unknown

Jack’s take – Adversity is great motivator. I will never forget a friend of mine laughing when I told him I wanted to be a major league player someday. I always tell kids that If every major league player, who was told they would never make it, quit at that time, there would be a whole set of different big leaguers playing.

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” Michael Jordan

Jack’s Take– The greats play with no fear – they realize adversity will exist, but that does not deter them from trying it again.

“It still comes back to a situation where I need to pitch out of it. I was raised well and I know my dad would be here tomorrow if I make excuses and pout and feel sorry for myself.” John Danks – Current Chicago White Sox Star

Jack’s Take –  John realizes that mistakes (errors) happen, and he understands that to be great and not just ordinary, people overcome others’ mistakes. Even though John is an established major league pitcher, his dad continues to be a dad and does not allow his son to make excuses and feel sorry for himself. This is what positive parenting in sports is all about

“You hope you learn from the bad things.” Frank Jemsek – Cog Hill Golf course owner talking about course criticism

Jack’s take – It is easier to get very defensive, when things do not go our way, but it takes a big person to understand the nature of sport – listen to critics, learn from them, adjust and move on, better for what we have learned.
